Glasgow Glee

In search of some quality time together D and I set off for our first trip to Glasgow. Driving through the rain on our way there it looked set to be a wash out. But lo and behold the glorious sun that we’ve been so missing suddenly came out and we spent the rest of the day able to idly wander around finding all of our favourite hot spots in our coolest local city.

We did a quick bit of internet scouring before we left and decided to go for lunch at the Willow Tree Tearooms which was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1904 (he even turned his hand to fashion to design the original waitress uniforms).  However, when we arrived at the famous coffee shop it lacked the cosy atmosphere we were hoping for. We got lucky though when we stumbled upon Cup Tea Lounge on Renfield Street. With its original, listed Victorian tiles lining the walls and ceilings and delicious cakes Cup delivers on all levels.
Next stop was the gallery of modern art. Karla Black’s tactile installation in the main gallery space makes a big impression, as does the absolutely incredible video ‘The Way Things Go’ by Peter Fischli and David Weiss.

We walked along the sunny riverside and then ducked into Slouch bar for two half price cocktails!

As if the day hadn’t been packed with treats enough already we then headed for Akbar's, an Indian restaurant whose famous naans get presented on their own stands because they are so huge!
It always amazes me how much can happen in one day when you take time to make or let things happen. We felt like we were on holiday in a far away land for those few hours and what a welcome holiday it was!
Equally welcome is the start of Wimbledon which, whenever I turn it on and hear the familiar buzz of applause and the sage commentary, transports me immediately back to childhood summers. Let’s hope the weather now starts to live up to expectations!
